Nicholas Onaca, MD, is an abdominal transplant surgeon and surgical director of kidney transplantation at Baylor University Medical Center. Dr. Onaca received his medical training in Romania, his surgical training in Israel and a transplant fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota followed by a solid organ and islet cell transplant fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Since Dr. Onaca joined the transplant team he has published nearly 100 articles including one that directly impacted protocols and the way liver cancer patients are evaluated and considered for liver transplantation. Expanded criteria for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: A report from the International Registry of Hepatic Tumors in Liver Transplantation Liver Transpl 13:391–399, 2007 has been cited nearly 200 times since its publication in 2007.
Dr. Onaca joined the transplant team at Baylor in 2006 and specializes in pancreas, kidney, liver and islet cell transplantation. He speaks 6 languages. In his free time, Dr. Onaca enjoys trail and mountain running and ballroom dancing.
