Baylor Transplant

Kidney Transplant Services

The transplant programs at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth, together, have performed  2900 kidney transplants since the kidney transplant program began in 1985.  In the past decade we’ve averaged 190 transplants annually.

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing, the 3 year Patient and Graft Survival rates for both Baylor Dallas and Baylor Fort Worth exceeds the national average.

Kidney Patients awaiting transplant at Baylor spend less time waiting for an organ.  The median time patients spend on the waitlist is 24.5 months at Baylor Dallas and 21.2 months at Baylor Fort Worth. The national wait time for a kidney is more than 4 years.

In addition, transplant candidates have the option of considering a combined kidney/pancreas transplant.  The combined kidney pancreas transplant can be performed for either type I or type II diabetes patients.  Also, diabetic patients who have previously undergone kidney transplantation can receive a pancreas transplant afterward.  This is called pancreas-after-kidney transplantation.  Finally, type I diabetics without any kidney disease may qualify for a pancreas (whole organ) transplant or islet cell transplant.

Research reveals that pancreas-after-kidney transplant protects the transplanted kidney from the effects of diabetes and kidney transplants last longer when performed in combination with a pancreas transplant.  According to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) database, pancreas transplants have the best results when combined with a kidney transplant.
